Abstract
This paper presents key findings from a physical modelling campaign investigating the impact of hull appendages and propeller-rudder configurations on the manoeuvring performance of a traditional North Atlantic fishing vessel. Manoeuvring tests were conducted using a 2.5-meter self-running remote-controlled model vessel equipped with a range of motion, acceleration, and force sensors, as well as propulsion and steering systems, all integrated with synchronized data acquisition and communication systems. The tests adhered to ITTC guidelines for free-running manoeuvring trials for conducting the turning circle, zig-zag, pull-out, and crash-stop manouvress. Results highlight the significant influence of hull appendages and rudder types on the vessel's manoeuvring characteristics. The experimental data, including repeatability studies, are being used to validate manoeuvring simulations. Ultimately, this research aims to enhance understanding of the hydrodynamic interactions between the vessel, propeller, rudder, and appendages, contributing to improved manoeuvring performance predictions.
