Abstract
Karel Lukas was among the participants in the Czechoslovak resistance during the First and Second World Wars as well as being a high-ranking officer in the Czechoslovak Army. Among other experiences, he took part as an observer in the battle of El Alamein in 1942 and served as a military attaché in the United States and Canada (1944-1947). When the communists seized power in Czechoslovakia in February 1948 he, as an enemy of the regime, was victimized by interrogators of the communist state police, who beat him to death in May 1949.
