Sodium Dynamics in Riparian Soils Impacted by Road Salt: Sorption Mechanisms and Land Use Controls

Abstract
The extensive use of NaCl as a deicer over the past 60 years has led to increased Na concentrations in streams and roadside soils. Riparian soils can also function as hotspots for Na due to exposure to direct road salt runoff from upslope areas and contact with Na-enriched watercourses. High Na levels in riparian zones can cause soil structure damage, vegetation deterioration, and diminished pollutants’ filtration. As a result of road salt use, riparian soils in southern Ontario presented high Na concentrations similar to samples from roadsides. These Na levels are related to the high adsorption capacity of these soils to accumulate Na derived from upslope contributions from nearby urban areas and the application of road salt in major roads in upstream parts. This Na, however, is weekly retained, which makes surface and groundwater more susceptible to Na buildup depending on soil characteristics. Thus, the impacts of Na from road salt extend beyond the roadside environment to affect the entire watershed.
