Studie se zabývá jazykovou zkouškou z češtiny pro účely trvalého pobytu z perspektivy jejích absolventů. Tato zkouška, povinná pro občany zemí mimo Evropskou unii, byla zavedena v roce 2009 na úrovni A1 a v roce 2021 byla její úroveň zvýšena na A2. Při analýze 43 jazykověbiografických rozhovorů, které jsme v letech 2021–2023 vedli s absolventy zkoušky s různým jazykovým zázemím (např. ruským, ukrajinským a vietnamským), jsme se zaměřili na místo této zkoušky v jazykových trajektoriích respondentů, na to, jak hodnotili obtížnost zkoušky, a na jejich názor na zvýšení obtížnosti zkoušky na úroveň A2. Zjistili jsme mj., že pro většinu mluvčích slovanských jazyků byla zkouška i na úrovni A2 spíše snadná a vnímali ji především jako administrativní povinnost. Pro vietnamské respondenty byla zkouška obtížná již na úrovni A1, a to i přesto, že se na ni dlouho připravovali. Stejně jako státní orgány argumentovali mnozí respondenti ve prospěch zvýšení obtížnosti zkoušky tím, že znalosti na úrovni A1 jsou pro každodenní život nedostatečné. Zároveň však upozorňovali na to, že pro mluvčí neslovanských jazyků a ty, kteří nepřicházejí s češtinou do styku vůbec nebo jen v omezené míře, bude úroveň A2 příliš náročná. Pro jazykovou politiku českého státu mají tato zjištění následující implikace: bylo by třeba zvýšit počet přípravných kurzů, zpřístupnit online přípravný kurz v co nejvíce jazykových verzích a uznávat jako ekvivalent zkoušky pro trvalý pobyt profesní zkoušky vykonané v českém jazyce.
