Abstract
Six CubeSats designed and built by students were launched on June 30, 2003 by a Russian launch vehicle, ROCKOT. CanX-1 (Canadian Advanced Nanospace eXperiment-1) was one of them and is the first picosatellite in Canadian history. CanX-1, the first satellite in the CanX program initiated by the Space Flight Laboratory at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies, employs a custom-built OBC, radio, ACS and power system, as well as experimental payloads such as CMOS imagers, a GPS receiver and a Xiphos Q4 controller card. Throughout this thesis, the electrical power subsystem comprising triple-junction GaAs solar panels, a lithium-ion battery, and a custom power distribution module is extensively presented. Moreover, the design, implementation and testing of the power system, in order to meet the mission and system level requirements, are explained.
