The practice of difference in a feminist collective: a critique of transversal politics
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This study was designed to examine feminist theory and practice focused on socially constructed categories of difference and their effect on the capacity of grassroots organizations to enact transformative anti-violence agendas. Using the qualitative research methods of semi-structured interviews and document analysis, the study explores the twenty-year evolution of the anti-oppression practices of a Toronto collective sharing several features with other urban North American feminist collectives. An examination of transversal and anti-oppression approaches to feminist practice provides the theoretical framework within which the research findings are examined. The findings suggest that while transversal dialogue offers possibilities for answering the expressed desire of many feminist activists for engagement across differences in social location, anti-oppression practices rooted in reflection on lived experience of oppression and internalized dominance are preconditions to engagement in constructive dialogue across mutiple standpoints. Intersectional feminist analysis is presented as offering a crucial bridge between the two approaches.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one teacher head, not a consensus.
