The Relationship of Snow Phenology and Lake Ice Thickness in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This study examines changing snow phenology conditions and its influence on lake ice development in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago (CAA), focusing on Resolute Lake and Small Lake on Cornwallis Island, Nunavut. Data obtained from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) snow cover product from 2000-2023 reveal earlier snow-off in the southern CAA regions and delayed snow-on across much of the Archipelago, collectively extending the snow-free season. Field observations (2022-2025) reveal that snow accumulation patterns, controlled by local topography, significantly influence lake ice thickness, where deeper snow often results in thinner underlying ice due to its insulating properties. The timing of snow onset is also critical, as early snow events suppress initial ice growth, whereas delayed snow accumulation allows for thicker ice formation. Overall, these findings underscore the sensitivity of snow and lake ice phenology to a warming Arctic climate, emphasizing the need for continued monitoring at both regional and site-specific scales.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
