After I Go, I Will Come Back: Imagining Tamil Community in the Contexts of Solidarity and Decolonization

Abstract
In acknowledgement of the increased recognition of the Tamil-Canadian community by provincial and federal governments, and in concern of how this recognition may further enmesh the community with the settler colonial state, I develop potential strategies for the Tamil community to engage in solidarity by acting in alignment with the decolonization of Turtle Island and through a refusal of complicity with the Canadian state. Taking inspiration from Indigenous methodologies of relation-building, as well as previous scholarship on solidarity and Asian-Indigenous relations, I call for the development of Indigenous-Tamil relations that are defined by indebtedness and reciprocity. I see land-based ceremonies as a potential site for this process, suggesting ways of building Indigenous-Tamil solidarity that regenerates Tamil cultural practices while also supporting Indigenous resurgence.
