An Investigation on Sulfidation Reaction of Metallic Copper in Copper Flash Smelting Conditions

Abstract
An increasing amount of recycled materials is charged in copper flash smelting furnaces to achieve a greater materials conservation. However, the copper contained in recycled materials poses the risk of liquid copper reaching the refractory, thus damaging it irreversibly. Therefore, sulfidation of copper is desired so that it enters the bath as sulfide. This study focused on the sulfidation behavior of metallic copper under flash smelting furnace conditions to understand the opportunity and limitations. Mixtures of copper concentrate and metallic copper were rapidly heated and quenched in a tube furnace under an argon or oxygen atmosphere. The formation of Cu2S was rapid enough to proceed in the flash smelting furnace within three seconds’ reaction time, followed by the slow iron diffusion. More remained copper was observed in the microscopic images with higher oxygen flow rates and larger copper particles.
