Motivation to study and investment in studying core french in secondary school: comparing English as a second language students and Canadian-born students
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This mixed-method study was conducted to assess and compare the motivation to study French of English as a second language and Canadian-born students. A total of 101 students responded to a questionnaire. The students were grouped and compared according to their French class: Grade 9 academic, Grade 9 applied or ESL. The factor analysis results of the questionnaire are distinct from past motivational research. The results of the analysis of variance demonstrated a statistically significant difference between the ESL group and the applied group. Six typical-case students, two from each group, were then interviewed. The interviews confirmed a differentiation from past research. The interviews also allowed for comparison among the groups, which highlighted a distinction from not only past research but also among the groups. Similar to the questionnaire results, the interviews confirmed that the ESL students are more motivated to study French than the other two groups. The interviews also offered explanations for such motivation on behalf of the ESL students.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
