Abstract
In this dissertation, I argue that the biblical equation between El Shaddai and Yahweh is partially due to their shared mountain motif. The etymology of El Shaddai as “El of the Mountain,” as it is the only etymology that proposes acceptable explanations for the philological challenges, is religio-historically sound, and offers a probable explanation for how the divine name was introduced into Hebrew. According to evidence in the Midianite-Kenite hypothesis, Yahweh originated as a southern mountain god. When Yahweh was brought into Canaan, the Israelites equated Yahweh with El Shaddai due to their shared natures as mountain gods.
