Abstract
My research investigates the dynamic interplay between theatre and contemporary dance within the context of dance-theatre. By revisiting the evolution from Ausdruckstanz to Tanztheater, I explore how this style communicates complex emotions and narratives. Through practice-based research, including workshops with students from the Centre for Drama, Theatre, and Performance Studies at the University of Toronto, I examine the integration of theatrical elements in dance. This methodology provides a deeper understanding of how movement and performance intersect, revealing new dimensions in choreographic creation. By reflecting on historical and contemporary practices and conducting in-person research with the Wuppertal Tanztheater Company, my study highlights the significance of character development and storytelling in enhancing dance interpretation. This research contributes to the ongoing dialogue about the future of dance theatre, offering insights for both theoretical and practical applications in the performing arts.
