The Site of Feeling: Black Caribbean Women’s Theories of Gathering on the Ubersoca Cruise ship

Abstract
This dissertation develops the concept of feeling and feeling with to illuminate how Black Caribbean women experience interconnection through Carnival-related gathering, specifically on the Ubersoca Cruise ship. Drawing on 31 interviews conducted with Black women who attended Ubersoca Cruise and various Caribbean Carnivals, I examine how participants theorize their own practices of gathering as a felt experience. In developing the concept, feeling and feeling with, I argue that the Ubersoca Cruise is a site that participants seek out to experience felt interconnection—with waters, friends, and themselves—and that these experiences shape their understanding of place. Chapters 3 through 5 develop distinct elements of feeling and feeling with. In Chapter 3, I share Black women’s accounts of their relationships to the ship and the waters, relationships not overdetermined by slavery. In Chapter 4, I examine the ideal yet costly conditions that allow participants to experience feeling interconnection with their close friends onboard, a feeling shaped by their prior experiences at Carnival. In Chapter 5, I draw attention to the epistemological dimension of feeling. I analyze participants' theories of joy and madness side-by-side to illuminate the knowledge participants derive from feeling deeply and feeling free at these gatherings. By conceptualizing feeling, interconnection, knowing, and Carnival-related gathering as entangled together, this dissertation makes three key interventions: (1) it radically reconceptualizes our understanding of Black women’s relationship to the ship and the Atlantic Ocean; (2) it centers the feeling of interconnection—with waters and friends—as central to Black women’s Carnival-related gathering on the Ubersoca Cruise; and (3) it identifies this feeling of interconnection as a form of knowledge.
