The multiple performances of identity through hip-hop culture: Relevance for Black youth in the Canadian context

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore how African-Canadian youth who participate in hip-hop culture abstract meaning from its broad range of geographical and ideological contexts. This research employed McCracken's (1998) Long Interview Method to interview 8 self-identified Black youth, divided equally amongst gender. The aim of this research was to find parallels between the experiences of African-Canadian users of hip-hop culture, and the larger body of research on African-American youth. The narratives generated from this study overlapped with the literature, indicating that hip-hop was a meaningful source of cultural information that could be used in multiple ways ranging from pedagogy, self-reflection, to various forms of self-identification. Particularly relevant was the finding that respondents used hip-hop culture to identify transnationally with the African Diaspora. Hip-hop's important cultural influence on African-Canadian youth holds great potential for the integration of hip-hop into service provision for Black youth in social work practice.
