Abstract
Virusi humane imunodeficijencije, HIV-1 koji je prvi puta izoliran 1983. godine te HIV-2 koji je prvi puta izoliran 1986. godine, članovi su obitelji retrovirusa i predstavljaju dvije različite epidemije. Sindrom stečene imunodeficijencije (AIDS) predstavlja zadnju fazu zaraze virusom humane imunodeficijencije (HIV) u kojoj je imunološki sustav teško oštećen. Transmisija HIV-a ovisi o brojnim faktorima ponašanja i biološkim faktorima te je zato vrlo kompleksna pojava dok se replikacija virusa humane imunodeficijencije može sumirati u 6 koraka: vezanje i ulaz virusa, otvaranje ovojnice virusne stanice, reverzna transkripcija, provirusna integracija, sinteza i sastavljanje virusnih proteina te pupanje. Virusno opterećenje predstavlja gustoću virusa u nečijoj krvi te, posljedično, i u ostatku njihovog organizma. Ono obično fluktuira oko određene vrijednosti (engl. set-point viral load, SFVL) koja korelira s virulentnosti i zaraznosti. HIV-1 dijeli se na "major" (M), "new" (N) i "outlier" (O) grupe, koji mogu predstavljati tri odvojena zoonotska transfera od čimpanzi, i koje imaju različitu geografsku rasprostranjenost. Liječenje HIV-a/AIDS-a pomoću lijekova naziva se antiretrovirusna terapija (ART). Lijekovi ne mogu izliječiti infekciju HIV-om, ali ju mogu držati pod kontrolom i smanjiti rizik zaraze drugih smanjenjem virusnog opterećenja u organizmu.
