Mental Health and Help-seeking Behaviours in Canadian BIPOC Olympic and Paralympic Athletes

Abstract
This study investigates the mental health help-seeking experiences among Canadian BIPOC Olympic and Paralympic athletes, in relation to their non-BIPOC peers. A secondary analysis of qualitative interview data from 6 athletes was conducted using reflexive thematic analysis, with intersectionality and Critical Race Theory as theoretical frameworks. Four main themes were identified: (1) The Racialized Impact of Stigma on Athletes' Help Seeking Behaviour, (2) Coach- Athlete Relationships Shape Help-Seeking in Athletes, (3) The Role of Sports Psychologists in Predominantly White Sports Environments, and (4) Athletes’ Perceptions of Sport and Help Seeking. The findings underscore the need for culturally competent mental health services and supportive environments within sports organizations. Addressing these factors can improve mental health outcomes and help-seeking behaviours among BIPOC athletes, contributing to their overall well-being and performance.
