Exploring Concussion Knowledge, Attitudes, and Intended Practices of Special Olympics Canada Coaches and Caregivers

Abstract
Special Olympics Canada (SOC) coaches and caregivers play an important role in the prevention, recognition, and management of concussion in athletes with intellectual disabilities (ID). However, little is known about their preparation, ability, and confidence to do so effectively. This study is the first to examine SOC coach and caregiver concussion education, knowledge, attitudes, and intended practices (KAP). A cross-sectional design utilizing a purposefully developed, non-standardized survey was employed to collect concussion education and KAP data from coaches and caregivers registered for the 2021/22 SOC sport season. Results demonstrated that prior concussion education was rare and that important gaps in knowledge and confidence exist among these groups. This research provides direction for targeted educational interventions for SOC coaches and caregivers to help create a safer more concussion-aware sporting environment for athletes with ID.
