Abstract
Background: Discrepancies in access to sedation and general anesthesia (S/GA) for dentistry exist in Canada, with limited data on its use outside hospital settings. A gap in literature exists regarding S/GA access and use in Quebec.Purpose: To evaluate the barriers and/or facilitators in accessing S/GA for dentistry as perceived by Quebec’s dentists. Methods: A web-based survey was distributed to Quebec’s dentists (n = 4,797). Results: Reported access and utilization were inversely related to distance. Dentists’ perception of the need for S/GA was the main barrier for both utilizers and non-utilizers. Utilizers cited time commitment, financial requirements, and lack of continuing dental education (CDE) as barriers, while non-utilizers reported a lack of S/GA providers and the risks of adverse events. Conclusion: Access to S/GA in Quebec is not uniform, though findings must be interpreted cautiously due to a low response rate and over-representation of utilizers.
