Describing the crisis experience for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness

Abstract
This qualitative study investigated the crisis phenomenon for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI). Intensive in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with fourteen individuals with SPMI. Grounded theory techniques were used to analyze the data and develop a theory of the crisis phenomenon. Results showed that an underlying vulnerability exists in individuals with SPMI which sets the stage for crisis occurrence, crisis experiences involve feeling overwhelmed and lacking control, and these experiences can manifest as episodes of agitation/anger/aggression, being low, feeling anxious, or euphoria. Immediate responses to crises involve either getting help or managing alone and there are a variety of processes for crisis resolution and prevention. Suicidality generally emerged as a separate phenomenon. It was concluded that the crisis experience for individuals with SPMI does not fit within the traditional model of crisis. Implications for supporting individuals with SPMI are provided.
