Abstract
This thesis project, involving twenty in-depth interviews with rural queer youth, uses feminist migration methodologies to explore rural-urban youth queer migration in Canada. This study seeks to better analyze how the intersections of rurality and queerness inform rural queers’ decisions to migrate and their understanding of queer space. Participants’ stories describe constantly negotiating their attachments to rural areas and building queer space wherever they are. Participants describe an ongoing negotiation of their connections to rural life, complicating the assumption that rural queers inevitably seek urban refuge. This study critiques the metronormative bias in queer studies, which prioritizes urban queer experiences while overlooking the ways rural queerness is lived and understood. By foregrounding rural-urban queer migration as a complex and varied experience, this research contributes to a more nuanced understanding of queer space and queer migration beyond the oppositional rural-urban binary.
