Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This thesis weaves together the key concepts of Vygotsky's theory of human development with a variety of ideas about democracy applied to a school setting to suggest an approach to literacy that is principled in its regard for the participants in literacy activities. Taking inspiration from Wittgenstein's device—‘the broken text’—the thesis replaces a standardized conception of literacy with diverse viewpoints on development and learning, participatory democracy, activity theory, critical thinking and intersubjectivity to strengthen the argument that literacy is embedded with issues of language, discourse and power and is, therefore, irreducible. Rather than resolve the tensions that exist in configuring an approach to literacy, the author argues that vitality and meaning can be wrought from an authentic inquiry and a praxis approach. Finally, the author explores how making literacy an ‘improvable object’ develops a more ethical view of literacy.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
