“Life Changing Surgery”: Exploring Patient Experience with Colorectal Surgery

Abstract
There is little evidence as to what elements of patient education provide the greatest benefit to patient experience and clinical outcomes during the colorectal surgical perioperative journey. Paper 1 is a scoping review of published literature on colorectal surgery patient experiences in countries with health care systems comparable to and including Canada. The most frequently noted challenges related to bodily functions and environmental factors. The most frequent examples were lack of practical patient education to manage their care or post-operative expectations, and negative emotions experienced due to diagnosis and surgery. Paper 2 is a qualitative study that explores 20 adult colorectal surgery patients’ perspectives on the role of patient education in enhancing the surgical experience. Our study found that colorectal surgery patients require more education on expectations for day of surgery and once home, and resources for community and peer support.
