Impact of Racism on the Self-Esteem of Immigrant Origin Black Youth: A Qualitative Study

Abstract
This study examined the impact of anti-Black racism (ABR) on the self-esteem of immigrant-origin Black youth (IOBY), within a Canadian higher educational context. Through the application of critical race and intersectionality theories, this study investigated how systemic and interpersonal experiences of ABR act as a health determinant. Semi-structured interviews with seven IOBY revealed three major themes reflecting the effect of ABR on self-esteem: (1) internalization and emotional distress (e.g., undermined self-worth, invisibility, inadequacy); (2) identity conflict and belonging challenges (e.g., social exclusion); (3) resilience and pride (e.g., racial affirmation and community solidarity despite adversity). Findings can support the development of interventions to bolster self-esteem and overall wellbeing in post-secondary IOBY. Identified protective factors can be targeted by institutions and governmental policy to minimize the psychological impact of discrimination on racialized immigrant youth and foster resilience.
