Abstract
What we already know about the subject... ▪ Ageism is present in society, and is detrimental to the physical and mental health of individuals.▪ Internalized ageism is a barrier to the adoption of a physically active lifestyle among seniors.What this study demonstrates... ▪The more a person internalizes ageism, i.e., the more convinced they are that they are too old to take part in physical activity, the less physically active they are.▪ Unanimously, individuals in their fifties, sixties, seventies and eighties confirm that they only see sexagenarians in the personification of physically active or sporty seniors in the media.▪ Even if they don't see themselves in the media, older seniors are very interested in learning new physical activities.▪ In our study, one in five seniors was prescribed or encouraged to take part in physical activity by their healthcare team.When this prescription was issued, a third of the group already had at least one chronic illness that restricted physical activity.
