Le 19 juillet 1870, Napoléon III déclare la guerre à Guillaume Ier de Prusse. Ce dernier reçoit le soutien de la Confédération de l’Allemagne du Nord, ainsi que des royaumes de Bavière et de Wurtemberg, et des grands-duchés de Bade et de Hesse-Darmstadt.
