Attitudes towards sexual orientation : adolescent perspectives in Newfoundland

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine attitudes of older adolescents towards gay, lesbian, bisexual (GLB) and straight people, and to investigate sex differences among them related to hometown size, and attitudes of GLB students toward other sexual minority groups. There were 226 participants (158 female, 68 males) from a small university in Eastern Canada who were administered the Index of Attitudes Towards Sexual Orientations. Results show that the majority of participants hold moderately negative views toward GLB people and that males hold more negative views towards GLB people than do females. Males hold the most negative attitudes toward gay males, and females hold the most negative attitude toward lesbians. There were no significant differences in attitudes related to the size of students' home communities, and in GLB students' attitudes toward other GLB groups. While this research was undertaken at the university level, future research should be done with junior high and high school students.
