Abstract
La presente investigación reconstruyó e interpretó el recorrido de la hueste de Ambrosio Alfinger, primer gobernador de la Provincia de Venezuela, durante la llamada expedición a los Pacabueyes o al Valle de Upar, cuyo regreso lo condujo a través de los territorios que hoy conforman los departamentos de Santander y Norte de Santander. En este trayecto, Alfinger interactuó con diversos pueblos prehispánicos, generando contactos que repercutieron en ambas sociedades. El objetivo inicial fue reconstruir la posible ruta de la hueste para identificar los puntos de cambio de etnia y vincular las descripciones etnográficas de las fuentes con los pueblos reconocidos hoy. Estos encuentros permitieron aproximarse a las mentalidades, intereses y estrategias de los conquistadores y de los nativos, así como a las consecuencias de dicho proceso. La investigación tomó como fuente principal el testimonio de Esteban Martín, intérprete y maestre de campo de Alfinger, complementado con crónicas coloniales y estudios académicos de los siglos XIX y XX. El análisis se enmarcó en la etnohistoria como confluencia entre la arqueología y la historia, y en la geografía histórica para correlacionar las descripciones de las fuentes con el relieve actual. Asimismo, se apoyó en herramientas como georreferenciación, cartografía digital, imágenes satelitales e inteligencia artificial para caracterizar todo el itinerario, con énfasis en el territorio que hoy conforman los Santanderes. Como resultado, se ofrece una reconstrucción argumentada de la ruta de Alfinger, identificando caminos, poblados, tiempos de desplazamiento y estrategias frente al relieve. Asimismo, se examinan los grupos étnicos contactados —sus costumbres, territorialidades, organización sociopolítica, entre otros aspectos— y se formulan hipótesis novedosas para la historia regional. La combinación de tecnologías digitales y método histórico permite abordar desde otra perspectiva interrogantes del poblamiento prehispánico y su reacción frente a la conquista, así como abrir nuevas preguntas y bases para futuras investigaciones transdisciplinarias.
