Abstract
Hospital work is heavily impacted by relationships within hospitals and by external political forces. This study examines the impact of neoliberalism and managerialism on workers in Ontario hospitals prior to May 2020. Through interviews with 20 hospital workers, it reveals diminishing autonomy and a growing physical and metaphorical distance between workers and management. This study demonstrates that long-standing problems existed in health care prior to the pandemic due to the impact of neoliberalism.
