Abstract
The Menorah Club – Officers' House was established in 1955 on the foundations of the Menorah Club, created by veterans of the Jewish Legion. Chaim Herzog, the club's president, fashioned it after prestigious British clubs. Unlike other officers' clubs, it attracted strong demand for membership. This article reviews the club's history and sheds light on the place of the senior IDF officer corps and the efforts made to strengthen its status in Israel's first decade. The club's hybrid structure – both military and civilian – offers a unique perspective on the relationship between the IDF and civilian society. The article presents the club's rich cultural and educational programs, designed to provide its members with broad knowledge and to prepare them for future leadership roles in Israeli society. The behavioral codes set by the club, and the tensions they generated among members, serve as a window into the debate over the nature of the IDF in its early years.
