Abstract
This event will follow a city commemoration of North Dakota's 125th year of statehood in Centennial Park The University of North Dakota and the City of Grand Forks will celebrate the hanging of a mural started by the late UND Art & Design Associate Professor Joel Jonientz on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the corner of Walnut Street and South Fifth Avenue, near downtown Grand Forks. The mural unveiling is scheduled to follow a special commemoration of North Dakota's 125th statehood anniversary that will take place nearby at 11:30 a.m., at Centennial Park. Located at the intersection of South 5th Street, Walnut Street, and Kittson Avenue; Centennial Park – anchored by a clock tower -- was developed 25 years ago to mark North Dakota's centennial. North Dakota officially became a state on Nov. 2, 1889. More about the mural The mural was commissioned by the city of Grand Forks and the Near Southside Neighborhood to enliven a storage building across from the city's downtown police headquarters. Part of the Mayor's Urban Neighborhood Initiative (MUNI), the mural project was a multi-year neighborhood effort involving brainstorming, fundraising, and hands-on community participation. Jonientz, who died earlier this year, designed the mural for the spot it now graces. The mural was finished by UND Art & Design colleagues and students in the Jonientz's honor. They plan to celebrate Jonientz's contributions to the Grand Forks community as part of the mural unveiling on Saturday. The day's events will conclude with a gathering on the second floor of Rhombus Guys restaurant nearby. All are invited to attend these community events.
