O fin do Estado Novo portugués foi impulsado polo Movimento das Forças Armadas, que acabou tutelando a democratización do país a través de mecanismos institucionalizados no sistema político como o Consello da Revolución e o deseño dun sistema semipresidencial que na súa primeira etapa implicou unha cohabitación político-militar. Cos cambios producidos nos anos oitenta do século XX desapareceu a presenza militar da vida política pero non a fórmula da cohabitación, xeneralizándose a partir de 1986 pola vía dos feitos unha cohabitación interpartidista na Presidencia da República e na Xefatura do Goberno que, cando está preto de cumprirse medio século da Revolución dos Caraveis, actúa como instrumento de control do poder.
