Abstract
Książka podejmuje problematykę XIX-wiecznej architektury mieszkalnej na przykładzie neobarokowego pałacu Goetzów-Okocimskich w Brzesku-Okocimiu wzniesionego w latach 1898-1900. Architektura pałacu rozpatrywana jest tu w kontekście typologicznym i stylowym, skupiając się tym samym na dwóch kluczowych zagadnieniach: przemian w architekturze rezydencjonalnej dokonujących się na przełomie XIX i XX stulecia oraz fenomenu wiedeńskiego neobaroku, w którego lansowaniu znaczącą rolę odegrali projektodawcy gmachu - biuro architektoniczne Fellner & Helmer. Osobna uwaga poświęcona zostaje Leopoldowi Simony’emu, innemu austriackiemu architektowi, który pokierował rozbudową rezydencji w latach 1908-1911. Ważnym kontekstem dla zrozumienia rozwiązań formalnych i funkcjonalnych zastosowanych w pałacu są omówione w książce koncepcje austriackich krytyków architektury, zwłaszcza zaś głównego propagatora neobaroku - Alberta Ilga oraz uwarunkowania rozwoju architektury rezydencjonalnej pod koniec XIX i na początku XX wieku w Galicji. Przeprowadzona analiza prowadzi do konkluzji, iż pałac w Okocimiu był nie tylko wygodną i nowoczesną rezydencją wzniesioną w modnej szacie stylowej dla zamożnego fabrykanta. Wybór form barokowych był tu uzasadniony konotacjami arystokratycznymi, co sugeruje, że mamy w tym przypadku do czynienia z przejawem poszukiwań narodowej tożsamości oraz wczesnego nawiązania do baroku pojętego jako rodzima tradycja architektoniczna.
