Abstract
In response to a planning condition on the development of land between 12 and 12A Bernard Close, Dunstable, Beds, LU5 4HL, the Heritage Network was commissioned to undertake a programme of archaeological investigation. Bernard Close is located on the north side of Church Street, in the historic core of Dunstable. The site lies at the south-eastern end of Bernard Close between nos. 12 and 12a, and centred on NGR TL 02292 22007 (Figure 1). A previous desk-based assessment of the site has identified the presence of Roman, medieval and post-medieval remains nearby, including inhumations. Three trial trenches were excavated and demonstrated a consistent stratigraphy across the entire site, indicating that it had not been subject to disturbance. A possible pit or tree bole was encountered on the western side of Trench 2, but this did not impact upon the natural substrate. The topsoil across the site was also relatively heavily rooted.
