Selon Michel de Certeau, penseur du quotidien, tracer la carte d’une ville implique de s’abstraire de ses méandres dans le but de rendre l’espace lisible, tandis que la plongée corporelle parmi les habitants permet d’être sensible à la réalité des pratiques, en partageant leur mode d’appréhension aveuglé. Or, il semble qu’avec Amsterdam Global Village van der Keuken soit parvenu en acte à articuler ces deux alternatives a priori contradictoires sur les plans épistémologiques et politiques : l’immersion vivante au coeur des situations, tactique minoritaire, et la saisie réflexive du visage de la ville, réminiscence d’un projet cartographique, stratégie du pouvoir. Sa manière de voir se distingue de la perspective impérialiste ou coloniale en opérant à l’horizontale : il s’agit pour lui de ne pas filmer trop longtemps depuis la même place et d’investir ce qui se déploie entre les positions fixes. Par rencontres, glissements et métamorphoses, son regard donne à saisir la ville globale comme un pays dont la spécificité est de présenter des profils multiples.
