Totaal organisch koolstof (TOC) en opgelost organisch koolstof (DOC) zijn belangrijke parameters om grondwater en oppervlaktewater te karakteriseren. Ze zijn ook medebepalend voor de kwaliteit van afvalwater en drinkwater. Grondwater is 1 van de belangrijkste bronnen voor de bereiding van drinkwater. Onder meer in het landelijk meetnet grondwater wordt bij het Laboratorium voor Anorganisch-analytische Chemie (LAC) DOC routinematig bepaald. In 1998 is een onderzoek gestart om een nieuwe TOC-analyzer (Phoenix 8000 van Tekmar-Dohrmann) in operationele staat te brengen, en de bepalingen te valideren. Bij de Phoenix 8000 wordt het monster 5n fosforzuur met een injector in een zogeheten 'IC-sparger' gebracht. Door de oplossing wordt stikstof geleid, waardoor koolstofdioxide, afkomstig van vluchtige organische (POC) of anorganische koolstofverbindingen (IC), wordt verwijderd. Na 'ontluchten' wordt de oplossing in een UV-reactor geleid waarna een peroxodisulfaatoplossing bij de oplossing wordt toegevoegd. Het organisch koolstof in de oplossing wordt daarbij gedestrueerd, en er wordt koolstofdioxide gevormd waarvan de hoeveelheid, na vochtverwijdering, wordt gemeten met een infrarooddetector. In dit rapport worden de resultaten weergegeven van het onderzoek naar optimale omstandigheden van de bepaling van TOC in range 3 (20 - 200 mg/l C). Op grond van deze resultaten is een analysevoorschrift, SOP LAC/M402, samengesteld. De precisie (reproduceerbaarheid) voor standaardoplossingen met een concentratie c in mg/l in het gehele meetbereik kan worden weergegeven door: 0,0145*c + 0.29. De aantoonbaarheidsgrens bedraagt 0,29 mg/l C. De resultaten van bepaling van DOC met de Phoenix 8000 komen goed overeen met de tot nu toe gebruikelijke bepaling van DOC met SOP LAC/M049.
