El texto surge de una investigación doctoral llevada a cabo en Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, México, sobre las relaciones que sustentan las formas de aprendizaje de un grupo de jóvenes en situación de riesgo que participan en un programa de educación no formal. El papel del educador se presenta como un agente transformador en la vida de estos jóvenes. Las relaciones y el clima escolar son fundamentales en la construcción de aprendizajes y en la convivencia. A través del método hermenéutico-interpretativo, exploramos la complejidad del mundo juvenil y sus significados. Los elementos clave fueron agrupados en dos categorías analíticas, una relativa al papel del educador y otra, al proceso de construcción de la relación. La primera refiere el papel del educador como constructor de relaciones generativas a partir de ambientes de tensa calma y la construcción del educador como un amigo. En la segunda categoría, observamos dos etapas en la relación de los educadores y los jóvenes para generar relaciones positivas encaminadas al aprendizaje: la primera es la barrera o la desconfianza, y la segunda es la apertura, en la que se estrechan los vínculos, surge la amistad y las relaciones son generativas y constructivas.
