Colour conservation of the New Zealand Guardian Trust building

Abstract
Hoggard, Prouse, and Gummer was an architectural firm that started in 1913 in Wellington, New Zealand. The partners were John Hoggard, William Prouse, and William Henry Gummer. One of their notable buildings was the “New Zealand Insurance” building, later known as the “Guardian Trust Building” in Queen Street, Auckland. This marble clad structure was modelled on turn-of-the-century commercial American buildings in what has been called a “stripped-down Classical” style. It was one of Auckland’s first high-rise office blocks and marked the transition between the previously Victorian styled commercial buildings and the later “glass and steel Modern” office buildings. It was built during the First World War as the headquarters of the New Zealand Insurance Company (NZI), and is still important as the earliest remaining high-rise office block in Auckland. Listed by the Heritage New Zealand as Category One Historic Place, the NZI building is widely recognised for its architectural value in the country’s architectural historiography. Currently, the building comprises apartments ranging from studios to penthouses, as well as commercial spaces. This research builds upon the widely recognised significance of this important example of architecture in New Zealand further contextualising the colours used here with other colours used by William Gummer (within his other architectural firm: Gummer Ford), and outlines a proposal for the conservation of its colours in the near future. The methodology of the study involves a literature review and archival research (historic photos and drawings) as well as on-site analyses. The latter involve the identification of the building colour palette (façade and interiors) by using the NCS Colourpin SE tool. The Colour reference codes follow the NCS 1950 chart and equivalent RGB values. The colours identified are also compared with archive material to better understand its original setting. The final colour palette will be useful to practitioners for any future conservation of this important example of early New Zealand’s 20th Century architecture.
