Die Ostöffnung hat vor allem den „Außenhandelsraum“ für die österreichische Wirtschaft maßgeblich erweitert. Dadurch haben nicht nur die Handelsaktivitäten mit den mittel- und osteuropäischen Staaten und ab 2004 mit den neuen EU-Mitgliedstaaten stark zugenommen, Österreichs Unternehmer haben sehr zügig die neuen Standortmöglichkeiten für Produktion und Dienstleistungen via Direktinvestitionen ausgeschöpft. Mit dieser „Mini-Globalisierung“, die für Österreich wirtschaftlich viele positive Effekte (mehr Handel, mehr Wirtschaftswachstum und Beschäftigung) gebracht hat, waren auch einige negative Aspekte verbunden, wie z.B. das Sinken der Lohnquote und die Verlagerung von Arbeitsplätze ins Ausland. Durch die Teilnahme an allen Integrationsschritten seit 1989 (Ostöffnung, EU-Beitritt, WWU-Teilnahme und EU-Erweiterung) konnte Österreich sein reales BIP zusätzlich jährlich um ½% bis 1% steigern.
