Abstract
Raunkiaer's life forms classify plants based on the position of their renewal tissues relative to the ground. The distribution of life forms on Earth varies with latitude from the Equator to the poles, determined by the different climatic conditions. The pattern of distribution of the life forms across various ecosystems on Earth mainly applies to lowlands, however. The alpine environment differs from the lowlands in many ways (temperature, pressure, precipitation). The aim of this thesis is to summarize the available information on the alpine environments across climatic zones and examine whether the life form distribution patterns observed in the lowlands can be found in the alpine habitats above the treeline. The thesis examines alpine environments of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, the Caucasus, the Zagros Mountain Range, the tropical Andes, and the Hawaiian archipelago. Based on the reviewed literature we conclude that hemicryptophytes dominate almost all of the examined alpine habitats across the climatic zones. Chamaephytes are also a very common alpine life form, geophytes and phanerophytes can be found in specific alpine habitats, although the latter only in the tropical mountains.
