The World Wide Web (WWW) is to play an important role in national, if not global, spatial data infrastructures. Via clearinghouses spatial data can be consulted or linked online. In this respect spatial base data are the framework for many applications, without which no georeferencing is possible. This paper (a concise version of a paper presented on the ICA conference 1999 in Ottawa) investigates the current use of the WWW by the traditional providers of these base data - the national mapping organisations - focused on the new interactive options that are available on the WWW and that broaden the use perspective of maps and spatial data. It appears that many mapping organisations in Europe, America, Southeast Asia and Oceania maintain a website, of which some are already intensively exploring new products and services that can be offered via the WWW.
