Abstract Historically, different surface finishes have been used on the inside surface of pressure tubes prior to the stress-relieving steam autoclave exposure of 400°C for 24 hours. The surface finish may affect the corrosion and deuterium ingress rates in pressure tubes. Corrosion tests on coupons prepared from a pressure tube with different surface finishes were conducted in static autoclaves at 300°C and in a heavy-water re-circulating loop in the Halden Boiling Water Reactor at 325°C under water chemistry conditions similar to that in the CANDU®1 reactor heat transport system. The surface finishes included: pickled, pickled and pre-filmed, abraded, abraded and pre-filmed, machined, machined and pre-filmed and shot peened and prefilmed. The pre-filming consisted of a steam exposure at 400°C for 24 hours. In this paper, the results on the effect of surface finish on corrosion and deuterium ingress in pressure tubes is reported. Surface finish affects the corrosion and deuterium pickup rate with pickled coupons having higher rates than those with an abraded, machined or pre-filmed surface finish.
