Corrosion Behavior of Incoloy 800H Welded with Different Filler Materials in Helium Environment Representative of High-Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor Conditions

Abstract
Abstract Material welding plays an important role in construction, operation, maintenance, and renovation of nuclear reactors. Incoloy 800H has long been used as a construction material in high-temperature corrosive environments. Its desirable mechanical and corrosion properties and satisfactory service history have prompted this alloy to be selected as a potential base material of weldments in nuclear fuel cladding, pressure vessels, and heat exchangers in High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTGRs). A variety of filler materials were tested in weldments with Incoloy 800H as the base material, and a good combination of high-temperature tensile properties and creep resistance were achieved. While mechanical properties are important performance parameters, corrosion behavior and particularly the galvanic corrosion of weldments could be life-limiting and is rarely studied under HTGR conditions. This paper presents the results of a corrosion study of Incoloy 800H and its weldments with filler materials Haynes 230, Inconel 82 and SS316L in impure helium gas at 760 °C. The results show that the corrosion rate of welded materials depends on the filler materials and overall corrosion rates of 800H weldments were found to be lower than that of the base metal, suggesting that galvanic corrosion is insignificant in the welded area under the test condition.
