In practice, compliance to bridge load restrictions is imperfect. This paper considers the effect of imperfect load compliance on the member reliability of a 30-m span bridge, using Monte Carlo simulation and sensitivity analysis. Three annual volumes of a governing truck are considered. Results show that under a stringent load restriction, even a small violation rate, in the order of 2.5%, leads to a significant loss of reliability. In other words, if load restrictions are not strictly enforced, the increase in reliability associated with posting a bridge can almost vanish. The loss in reliability is more pronounced for larger annual truck volumes. This study, therefore, questions the effectiveness of load restriction enforcement as a bridge management tool.
