Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Relevance of the research. Ukrainian beaded jewellery is an important component of folk art and the national cultural heritage of Ukraine. Their emergence and development are closely related to the ethnic identity of the Ukrainian people, their spiritual world and their cultural traditions. Beadwork in Ukraine has deep historical roots. The first mentions of the use of beads for jewellery are found in archaeological finds of the Trypillia culture. Over the centuries, beadwork has become widespread, especially in the western regions of Ukraine (Hutsul, Bukovyna, and Podillia). The relevance of the study is due to the need for a systematic study of ancient Ukrainian jewellery as elements of the regional development of decorative and applied arts in the activities of craftsmen of the Ukrainian diaspora. The purpose is to investigate and analyze the artistic features and the process of creating the neck ornament of the sylianka using the example of the work of Olha Borysevich, a craftswoman from the Ivano-Frankivsk region, a representative of the Ukrainian diaspora in Manchester, United Kingdom, and her role in preserving Ukrainian identity. Conclusions. The analyzed factual material gives reason to assert that modern Ukrainian jewellery, namely beaded jewellery, has absorbed a plastic combination of line, rhythm, proportion, material, as well as the achievements of the folk art of the Ivano-Frankivsk region, creating a new complex of decorations that can adequately complement modern women's clothing. The presented sylianka primarily features phytomorphic (vegetable) and geometric motifs. All the jewellery described was created by stringing beads on thread and subsequently weaving them in the form of a wide necklace or ribbon. The craftswoman from the Ivano-Frankivsk region uses the technique of parallel stringing, cross-weaving and weaving on a loom. We see prospects for studying the features of sylianka by combining them with the study of Ukrainian ethnic jewellery in general, which will allow us to characterise in detail the system of female and male decoration in the studied region.
