Los archivos locales de la ciudad de México muestran diversos tipos de alojamientos populares. Aparte de las vecindades que, sin lugar a dudas, albergaban a la mayor parte de la población, existían alojamientos temporales de diferentes categorías (casas de huéspedes, mesones y posadas y dormitorios públicos) en donde pernoctaban no sólo los visitantes pobres de la ciudad sino una buena parte de la población que no tenía residencia fija. En las siguientes páginas se describen las condiciones materiales de los alojamientos temporales para habitantes pobres en esta ciudad a finales del Porfiriato y durante la época revolucionaria. Así mismo, se caracteriza el discurso gubernamental en que se basaban las políticas de control de este tipo de viviendas que, en las primeras décadas del siglo XX, fueron motivo de álgidos debates derivados de las preocupaciones por la salubridad y la "civilización de los comportamientos.
