Building an Intersection: Establishing Communal Crosswalks in Tkaronto’s Performance Culture

Abstract
In tracing the history of Tkaronto’s performance culture, what quickly becomes clear is the volatility of its access culture. As historically, efforts to hold diverse bodyminds within shared space have become mired within capitalist culture, the priority has instead become how to facilitate a space with the least disruptions. This focus on profit, and efficiency, has therefore led to artists and institutions who are individualist in nature, in order to seek capital consistency. This paper performs an inquiry into the current state of access movements within Tkaronto, problematizing their priorities through an analysis of their practices, when held against Disability Studies rhetoric. In doing so, this paper develops a firm argument against this capitalist tradition of access, and through a series of interviews, and a longtable discussion with contemporary artists, proposes a community-led, community developed system of access: which sacrifices capital consistency, for community care.
