Enseña sociología en la Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense. Es miembro del Consejo Científico de ATTAC-Francia y es uno de los más innovadores estudiosos del pensamiento de Marx. Es autor de varios libros, dentro de los que se encuentran: L´Homme économique: Essai sur les racines du néolibéralisme (2007, Gallimard) y el fundamental Marx, Prénom: Karl (con Pierre Dardot, 2012, Gallimard), que ha suscitado gran interés y discusiones en Francia y en el mundo. Con Pierre Dardot también publicó el importante volumen sobre la sociedad neoliberal: La nouvelle raison du monde. Essai sur la société néolibérale (2009, La Découver te).
