Abstract
Demokratyzacja jest wielowymiarowym zbiorem procesów, które przebiegają w sferze politycznej i (szerzej) w życiu publicznym. Narastaniu demokratyzacji w jednych obszarach może towarzyszyć regres w innych. Można mówić o różnych domenach demokratyzacji oraz stopniach zaawansowania w zależności od kryteriów oraz miar, które się uwzględni. To oznacza, że demokracja nie ma zero-jedynkowego charakteru. Błędem byłoby więc twierdzić, poza skrajnymi sytuacjami, że istnieje demokracja w danym kraju albo że jej niema. Demokracja przybiera wiele pośrednich odcieni. Obiecującą poznawczo perspektywą badawczą jest więc używanie takiego pojęcia demokracji, które uwrażliwia badacza na ciągłe jej stawanie się, a nie trwanie. Z tego punktu widzenia sensownym podejściem jest śledzenie procesów demokratyzacji w społeczeństwach niedemokratycznych, nawet tych z elementami totalitaryzmu, oraz procesów polegających na regresie demokracji w społeczeństwach powszechnie uznawanych za demokratyczne. Powyższe tezy rozwijam i ilustruję poprzez odwołanie się do wydarzeń z ostatnich dwóch dekad Polskiej Rzeczypospolitej Ludowej oraz pierwszego okresu Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej, zwieńczonego wejściem Polski do Unii Europejskiej.
