Prasa odgrywa ważną rolę w każdym społeczeństwie.W społecznościach emigranckich i etnicznych rola ta jest jeszcze większa.Co ważniejsze, znaczenie jej nie maleje, mimo pojawienia się radia i telewizji, które emitują nawet całe bloki progra mowe w językach etnicznych.Publikacje prasowe polskiej grupy etnicznej w Kanadzie (różnego typu periodyki i biuletyny), podobnie jak gazety innych grup, spełniają wiele różnych funkcji.Podstawową jest szeroko rozumiana rola informacyjna, a oprócz tego prasa ta zamieszcza porady praktyczne, teksty literackie i wiadomości kulturalne.Cza sopisma etniczne, również te wydawane w języku polskim, spełniają także trzy ważne funkcje społeczne.Po pierwsze, pomagają utrzymać więzi z krajem pochodzenia, za chować polską identyfikację, kulturę i tradycję; odgrywają znaczącą rolę w podtrzy mywaniu wśród czytelników znajomości języka polskiego.Po drugie, informują o aktywności środowiska polonijnego.Pomagają je stworzyć i utrzymać, nawiązywać kontakty oraz rozwijać działalność organizacyjną Trzecią funkcją prasy etnicznej jest ułatwianie imigrantom i osobom polskiego pochodzenia przystosowywania się do wa runków kanadyjskich, a następnie do stopniowej asymilacji.Zainteresowanie mniejszościowymi grupami etnicznymi, widoczne w Kanadzie od lat 60., zostało w latach 70.spotęgowane, dzięki przyjętej przez to państwo polityce wielokulturowości.Zaowocowało to licznymi publikacjami także na temat prasy et nicznej1.Powstały również publikacje poświęcone prasie polskojęzycznej.Najcenniej szą z nich jest książka W. Turka, Polish Language Press in Canada (Toronto 1962).Zawiera ona wszechstronną analizę funkcji prasy etnicznej i jest znakomitym, cało ściowym opracowaniem historycznym.Autor zamieścił również charakterystykę wy chodzących w Kanadzie polonijnych periodyków.Praca obejmuje dzieje tej prasy do roku 1960.Nowsze publikacje to artykuły przyczynkarskie, przedstawiające zwykle
