Abstract
Giorgio Bassani is recognized as a prominent Italian author of the 20th century. He is celebrated for his depictions of the Italian Jewish community during the rise of Fascism and the aftermath of the Second World War. In addition to his literary contributions, Bassani was an anti-fascist and environmentalist, co-founding the Italia Nostra association. This research aims to provide a comprehensive perspective on Bassani’s dual roles, arguing that his environmental consciousness was present during his literary career and that his identity as an author influenced his environmental activism even during periods without literary production. The thesis employs an ecocritical and econarratological framework to analyze three of Bassani’s key works: Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini, L’airone, and Italia da salvare. It consists of an introductory chapter outlining the theoretical foundation, followed by three main chapters that offer in-depth analyses of each work. Each chapter is divided into two sections: the first provides biographical background and theoretical context to prepare the reader for the analysis, while the second is analytical, focusing on specific elements that represent Bassani’s environmental consciousness. Chapter 1 draws significantly from the author’s biography and uses an econarratological approach to analyze the symbolism of the Finzi-Continis’ garden. Chapter 2 applies ecocritical concepts to examine the setting of the Comacchio marshes and the heron. The final chapter primarily employs econarratological tools to analyze Bassani’s non-literary texts, identifying the recurring narratives he used to address environmental issues. Through this combination of biographical context, ecocritical analysis, and econarratological tools, I demonstrate that traces of Bassani’s environmental activism are present even in his so-called literary phase, and that during the later period in which he focuses on environmental work, his identity as an author continued to shape and inform his activism. Bassani’s case uniquely illustrates the coexistence of his roles as both writer and environmentalist.
